<image:title>School based art therapy - What is school based art therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>When children and young people experience difficulties in their lives, they may find learning and fitting in with school life a challenge. School based art therapy provision allows the emotional needs of children to be met more readily, thus facilitating learning and development whilst also enhancing the wellbeing of the wider school community. Creative Expressions provides one to one and group art therapy sessions for children and young people who attend schools and other educational establishments. Art therapy can work in partnership with school policies concerning emotional health and child protection. School based art therapy can help to improve an individual’s psychological, emotional, social and educational achievement. Art therapy can also help to improve attendance at school. Art therapists always ask for written permission from parents/carers before commencing art therapy.</image:caption>

<image:title>School based art therapy - How does art therapy take place at school?</image:title>
<image:caption>Art therapy sessions are held within the school day, on a weekly basis during term time. The sessions are held in the same room, at the same time and day each week and are usually 40 minutes long. The art therapist provides a variety of art and play materials needed for the session. Children usually direct the session through their choice of art making or playing. The therapist will work with what the children bring up in the session as well as working towards specific aims and goals set at the beginning of therapy. Sometimes the therapist makes art with the children, or helps them to explore certain themes within the creative process.</image:caption>

<image:title>What is art therapy? - What is art therapy?</image:title>
<image:caption>Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art making and the creative process to help people explore feelings, emotions and experiences. Art therapy is a three way process that focusses on both using the art materials and the relationship between the client and the therapist. You don’t need to have any previous experience in art making to have art therapy - art therapy focuses on reflecting together about the process and experience of using the materials, helping to express and understand feelings that could otherwise be difficult to verbalise. Art making in art therapy looks different for everyone and can include; squashing some clay, scribbling some marks onto paper, ripping up paper, using playdough, making a collage or using the paints. Art therapists often provide play materials for younger children; playing in the presence of an art therapist can help them to communicate feelings which are too hard to explain. When working with children in art therapy there may be a mixture of making art, talking and playing. Art therapy can be helpful for people who find talking about their feelings difficult. The art making process can facilitate expression of hidden or unwanted feelings and help to bring them out into the open.</image:caption>

<image:title>What is art therapy? - How can art therapy help?</image:title>
<image:caption>Art therapy can help children, young people and adults who are going through, or have been through a difficult time, understand their feelings and make sense of their experiences. Art therapy sessions are unique to each person - the needs of the client are at the forefront of the therapy. The client and the therapist work together in art therapy; focussing on using the art materials and thinking about what arises during sessions. The therapist explores both conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings with the client, helping them to express and understand their emotions and experiences and find positive ways to deal with them. In this way, art therapy can offer a way to gain more insight and a different perspective, fostering change and growth in the individual.</image:caption>
